In factory production, these polymers are sorted, cleaned, and ground into regrind flakes before being re-pelletized.
The primary engineering challenge in recycled plastics is maintaining a steady Melt Flow Index (MFI). Virgin polycarbonate (PC) flows uniformly through heated manifold molds. Recycled PC, by contrast, often contains thermal heat history and microscopic impurities that can alter polymer chain lengths. If the injection pressure and mold barrel temperatures are not adjusted correctly, recycled frames can suffer from short shots (incomplete filling) or brittle temple tips.
At the sampling stage, it is necessary to verify whether the samples utilize the same resin grade and recycled content specifications as those planned for mass production. If the samples are made from virgin plastic while mass production will use recycled resin, then the samples do not validate the actual production scenario.
Next, check surface finish, color consistency, frame stiffness, temple flexibility, hinge holding, cosmetic marks, logo compatibility and whether the same resin specification can be repeated in future orders.
The key question is not "Is this recycled plastic?" It is "What is recycled, by how much, and how is that claim documented?"
ISO 14021:2026 defines recycled content as the proportion by mass of recycled material in, or attributed to, a product, component or packaging. It also recognizes that attributed content may be handled through chain-of-custody systems such as mass balance.
That matters because "made with recycled plastic" and "made with 30% recycled material" are not the same claim.
Acetate Sunglasses
Standard optical acetate consists of roughly 70% to 75% natural cellulose (derived from refined cotton linter and soft wood pulp) combined with synthetic petroleum-derived plasticizers like diethyl phthalate (DEP).
True bio-based acetate replaces synthetic phthalate plasticizers with certified vegetable-derived additives (often based on citric or plant acid esters). The finished material maintains high bio-based carbon content without releasing toxic phthalate residues during manufacturing, CNC routing, or prolonged skin contact.
A useful acetate sample should prove color depth, transparency, pattern quality, edge finishing, polish, temple alignment, hinge installation and consistency between the approved sample and the sheet material available for bulk production.
Do not assume that every acetate frame can automatically be marketed as biodegradable, recycled or "100% eco-friendly." Those claims depend on the exact material formulation and supporting evidence.
Wooden Sunglasses
Wood works best when the collection is built around craftsmanship, outdoor lifestyle, natural texture or limited-edition storytelling.
But wood creates different manufacturing risks. Ask the supplier to confirm wood species, solid or laminated construction, moisture control, surface coating, hinge anchoring, warpage control and acceptable grain variation.
If your marketing relies on responsible forestry, FSC chain-of-custody evidence is more meaningful than a generic "sustainably sourced wood" statement. FSC explains that chain-of-custody certification tracks eligible forest-based material through processing and distribution.

Choose Recycled Plastic When Cost and Scale Matter Most
Recycled plastic is usually the most practical route when a brand wants a sustainability angle across a wider collection without moving every SKU into a premium price tier.
It is particularly suitable for promotional sunglasses, fashion programs with multiple colors, retail repeat orders and larger private-label programs.
Its commercial advantage is scalability. Once the polymer, tooling, color and recycled-content specification are confirmed, production can be structured around repeatable geometry and larger runs.
However, "recycled plastic" is not a complete material specification.
Your RFQ should identify the polymer, recycled-content percentage, whether the content is pre-consumer, post-consumer or attributed through a certified mass-balance system, and what documentation is available.
The FTC's Green Guides state that recycled-content claims should apply to material recovered or diverted from the waste stream, and that partial recycled-content claims should be qualified rather than presented as if the whole product were recycled.

Choose Wood When Differentiation Matters More Than Standardization

The trade-off is consistency.
Two pieces of wood can show different grain, tone and texture even within the same species. The acceptable range should therefore be agreed before mass production.
If your retailer expects every frame to look nearly identical, recycled plastic or acetate is usually easier to control. If the customer values natural variation and a more individual product story, wood can be commercially stronger.

Do Not Treat "Sustainable" as a Material Name
"Sustainable," "green" and "eco-friendly" are environmental claims, not technical material specifications.
