The European Union Released The Latest Standard EN ISO 12312-1:2022 For Sunglasses

Recently, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) officially released the latest standard EN ISO 12312-1:2022 for sunglasses.

Standard implementation date:

January 31, 2023

Regulatory Requirements Notes:

The current EU PPE regulations (EU 2016/425) harmonized standard for sunglasses is still the old version EN ISO 12312-1:2013/A1:2015. When will the harmonized standard for sunglasses adopt the new version (ie EN ISO 12312-1:2022 has not Officially adopted by the EU official regulations), the EU official has not given a specific timetable at present, please continue to contact the Intertek customer team or follow this official account to get the latest news.

Compared with the old version of the standard, the main changes of the new version of the standard are as follows:

Added requirements for electrochromic lenses;

Replace the inspection method of local refractive power changes with the inspection method of             observing a regular grid image through the lens (ISO 18526-1:2020 article 6.3);

Activation of photochromic lenses at 5°C and 35°C was introduced as optional information;

Extend side protection to category 4 children's sunglasses;

Introduction of seven mannequins according to ISO 18526-4:2020, three Type 1 and three Type            2, plus one child mannequin. Each type comes in three sizes—small, medium, and large. For                    sunglasses, the use of these test manikins often involves varying interpupillary distances. For                  example, type 1 interpupillary distances are 60, 64, 68 mm;

*  Update the uniformity requirement for visible light transmission within a monolithic area,                       reducing the measurement area to 30mm diameter while increasing the limit to 15% (the 20%               limit for Type 4 filters remains unchanged).

The new version of the sunglasses standard EN ISO 12312-1:2022 has changed the requirements of headform parameters and test items, which will have a certain impact on the test results.
